A lot of individuals, groups, and companies talk about this “journey” but abandon the mission at the first sight of falling rocks. They choose the road less turbulent where privilege and comfort thrives, or retreat to marginalized pit stops where agreement can be confused as healing.
The journey to create a more inclusive and just environment that stands against any form of injustice is not for the faint of heart. It requires a relentless commitment to do what’s right even when what’s popular tradition is easier and highly favored. It demands the courage and skill to look deep into the rearview, reflecting on objects and mindsets that may be closer to you than they appear or than you'd ever care to acknowledge. It’s a journey where loss of mental and physical fuel will occur and we will feel defeated, victorious, angry, happy, accomplished, lost, found, loved, hated, ignored, seen, heard, uncertain, powerless, and POWERFUL. And, as our navigation systems reboot, and our tanks are filled again, we are joined by other passengers and drivers who commit to this journey alongside us, understanding that if we give up, we lose out. When we have good company- those who make sure we don’t fall asleep at the wheel; or those that grab hold of the aux cord and provide us with that sweet soul music; or that co-pilot who grabs the wheel of accountability when we veer off the path and check our blindspots where we fail, our journey becomes a bitter sweet mission where those potholes, speed bumps and speed limits become nothing more than challenges that we expect within our travels. With practice, we know when to mash the gas, when to swerve, and we know when to tap the brake. Nevertheless, in the end, we understand that equity and inclusion is not a destination, but a constant forward movement where we recognize our milestones while we keep our eyes on the road to excellence, sustainability and a care for humanity. We all have the power to drive, from behind the wheel, or as a passenger; but we have an obligation to get on the bus and move it forward.
Have you REALLY committed to the journey or is it more lip service in a space where carefully crafted language rarely reflects our truths in the mission?
